30 years of adapting to a changing energy industry

The energy industry has changed significantly since EffecTech was established in 1996. New markets, technologies and energy sources have created new measurement requirements. EffecTech has evolved alongside them, developing the expertise, products and services needed to provide customers with confidence that their measurements are traceable, reliable and fit for purpose.

Natural gas, LNG and biomethane have presented different measurement challenges at different points in EffecTech’s history. Each time, we have responded by applying our existing expertise and developing new capabilities, while maintaining the independence and integrity that customers rely on from EffecTech.

Natural gas: where it began

EffecTech was established at a time of major change in the UK natural gas industry. New requirements meant that gas transportation charges were based on the energy delivered, making accurate measurement of gas composition and calorific value essential.

EffecTech responded by providing high-quality calibration gases and independent performance evaluations of gas chromatographs. These services helped operators demonstrate that their measurement systems were performing as required and that their results were traceable and fit for purpose.

From these beginnings in the UK, EffecTech’s expertise and services expanded internationally as customers elsewhere faced many of the same measurement challenges.

LNG: expanding our expertise

As liquefied natural gas (LNG) became an increasingly important part of the global energy market, it brought different measurement challenges. With high-value LNG traded internationally, accurate and reliable measurement is critical.

EffecTech developed specialist products and services to support the LNG industry, including calibration gases, proficiency testing and performance evaluations. We also introduced a calibration service for direct measurement LNG analysers, supported by the development of specialist liquid reference materials, and, more recently, gained accreditation to provide LNG sampling system inspections.

Biomethane: adapting to a changing energy mix

The growth of biomethane brought another set of requirements. Produced from renewable sources, biomethane can be injected into existing gas networks, but operators need to demonstrate that it meets the requirements for network entry.

In response, EffecTech developed performance evaluations for network entry, including validations of H₂S and O₂ sensors. We also developed standard calibration gas mixtures for biomethane sites and provided technical expertise to help operators demonstrate conformity with network requirements.
