As EffecTech celebrates its 30th anniversary, our five UKAS accreditations reflect three decades of developing our expertise. From reference standards and gas sample testing to performance evaluations, inspections and proficiency testing, that expertise has grown by looking beyond isolated aspects of measurement to all parts of the process that affect the final result.

This integrated approach means we can provide customers with a complementary set of services across the measurement chain that gives them genuine value and allows them to improve their own operations.

How EffecTech’s accredited expertise connects calibration gases and sample testing, calibration and validation, inspection and proficiency testing

Calibration Gases

The majority of our calibration gas mixtures are covered by both ISO 17034 and ISO/IEC 17025, giving customers a reference material certificate and a calibration certificate. Our ISO/IEC 17025 scope also covers a broader range of mixtures, including Primary Reference Gas Mixtures (PRGMs) and Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEM) mixtures.

Gas Sample Testing

Our ISO/IEC 17025 – Testing accreditation covers the composition testing of gas samples, including natural gas, LNG and biomethane, as well as the analysis of fuel gases to support CO₂ emissions reporting under schemes such as the UK ETS and EU ETS.

This allows us to provide accredited gas composition results, complementing our expertise in the calibration gases and analytical methods used to produce reliable measurements.

Calibration and Validation

Our ISO/IEC 17025 – Calibration accreditation covers the on-site calibration and validation of gas chromatographs. This includes performance evaluations using ISO 10723 to quantify the performance characteristics of an instrument.

This directly connects our expertise in producing and characterising reference standards and certified reference materials with our understanding of how those standards are used to assess analytical instruments in operational environments.

Rather than considering the calibration gas and analyser separately, this enables us to understand their relationship within the measurement process and identify factors that can affect the quality of the resulting data.

Inspections

The performance of an analyser is only one part of the story. Our ISO/IEC 17020-accredited inspections, reinforced by experience gained from working with thousands of instruments worldwide, allow us to assess the wider gas quality measurement system, including its sampling, calibration, analysis and quality control.

By looking at how these different elements work together, we can identify issues that may not be apparent when only one part of the system is examined. These can range from opportunities to improve measurement performance to significant problems that, if left unresolved, could affect regulatory or contractual compliance and prevent gas from being accepted for entry into the network.

Proficiency Testing

ISO/IEC 17043-accredited proficiency testing at EffecTech provides an independent check on the analytical results produced by a measurement system. This provides laboratories with external evidence of analytical performance.

When the results indicate potential bias or performance issues, our wider measurement expertise allows us to look beyond the result itself and advise on possible causes across the measurement process. This could include any element of the measurement system such as reference standards, calibration, analyser performance or analytical methods.

Connected Expertise Across Gas Measurement

Whilst each individual accreditation provides independent recognition of competence in a particular area, the wider value that we provide comes from bringing those independently recognised capabilities together.

Our experience spans reference standards, calibration, analytical performance, proficiency testing and complete gas quality measurement systems. Knowledge and experience gained in one area strengthen our understanding of other parts of the measurement process, giving EffecTech a unique and highly valued view of how reliable gas measurements are produced and how problems can be identified and resolved.

This breadth of expertise also provides a strong foundation for the future. As technological advances create new and different gas measurement requirements, EffecTech’s 30 years of experience and breadth of in-house expertise will help us respond to new measurement challenges, such as CO₂ measurement for carbon capture applications.
