Carbon dioxide reference materials

EffecTech is currently developing a range of high-quality, low uncertainty traceable reference materials for carbon dioxide (CO2) purity measurements.

Why do we need carbon dioxide reference materials?

CCUS is an essential part of industrial decarbonisation, a key element in the plan for achieving Net Zero. Much like fuel gases, CO2 needs to be measured accurately:

  • Density for custody transfer
CO2 density must be calculated for flow measurement and is affected by pressure, temperature and impurities so its composition needs to be measured
  • Reactive impurities
Specific impurities can damage pipelines, storage facilities and infrastructure so they must be measured for compliance at pipeline entry points

Gas Analysis 2026

EffecTech’s Development Support Engineer, Dr Stephen Marr, will be presenting his CO2 reference materials research findings at the 2026 Gas Analysis Symposium, 27-29 January 2026, in Paris.

Stephen, who was recently awarded his PhD in analytical chemistry from Loughborough University, will deliver a presentation called ‘Using novel production methods for dense phase CO2 reference materials‘ in the Alternative Fuels & Decarbonisation session, at 3.20pm on Thursday 29 January.

The symposium programme is here.

EffecTech will also be exhibiting at Gas Analysis at Stand A19 – we look forward to seeing you there!
