Reducing carbon dioxide (CO) production by replacing fossil fuels with renewable resources is now a global target. One way of reducing COemissions is to enrich natural gas with up to 20% hydrogen, and trials such as HyDeploy and HyNet are demonstrating that this is a viable option.

EffecTech offers high quality calibration gases and Performance Evaluations to reduce measurement uncertainty in your hydrogen application. For more information, please contact us.

Why measure hydrogen?

Just like natural gas, hydrogen needs to be accurately measured to fulfil fiscal and other contractual obligations. But how does the presence of hydrogen affect the accuracy and uncertainty of these important measurements?

Hydrogen is found in natural gas at low ppm levels and is usually disregarded as its presence is almost insignificant on the calculated physical properties of the gas. In addition, it is quite difficult to measure using gas chromatography as it requires separate carrier gas and detector from the major components. However, this move to include hydrogen up to 20% by volume means its measurement can no longer be ignored, and instrument manufacturers now have to address this new challenge

How can EffecTech help you measure hydrogen?

EffecTech has now developed the capability to assess any new method for measuring hydrogen in natural gas by modifying the compositions of the reference gases it uses as part of the ISO 10723 performance evaluation. Even inferential instruments can be assessed using dynamic blending techniques. This means that a level playing field can be established for comparing instruments measuring hydrogen, and clear and definitive evaluations be made of their performance. This will help both the instrument manufacturers in developing and honing their methods, and also the end users by giving them confidence that the measurements of their greener gas are compliant with regulatory, contractual and environmental requirements.
