Having worked at EffecTech for over a decade, I’ve seen our business continually evolve to meet the changing needs of our customers. During that time, I’ve come to realise that our customers don’t choose us simply for the quality of our products and services; they choose us for something more fundamental: certainty.

Every pivotal period in history has been accompanied by a corresponding shift in technology. As new energy technologies develop to meet the demands of a growing global population while reducing our impact on the planet, the measurement challenges facing industry will evolve with them. The transition towards hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation and storage will introduce new gas compositions, contaminants, materials and processes that require robust measurement methods and traceability.

At the same time, artificial intelligence will create new opportunities to interpret complex datasets, identify trends and support measurement decisions. The miniaturisation of analytical technology and increasing use of distributed, low-cost sensors could also make continuous measurement possible on a previously impractical scale. However, these advances will introduce new questions around calibration, validation, data quality, uncertainty and long-term measurement assurance.

The next 30 years are therefore likely to look very different from the past 30, with new energy sources, processes and analytical technologies creating measurement challenges that we cannot yet fully anticipate. As we navigate these challenges, what should remain unchanged is our commitment to good measurement science and to providing results that can be trusted. We must continue to learn, challenge established thinking and promote the sharing of new ideas. The tools may change, but our purpose remains the same: to provide certainty in measurement.
